Karnataka cop, part of squad to tackle IPL betting, arrested for placing bets himself
A Karnataka policeman who was part of a crime bureau team keeping tabs on betting and sports gambling racket was arrested for allegedly running one himself in Chikkaballpura district.
As per a report in The News Minute, this was revealed when a betting racked ring leader, arrested by the Karnataka Police, dared the officials to arrest a head constable in district crime bureau who he claimed ran a bigger racket than him.
Following the revelation, Head Constable Manjunath (42) was arrested. He is a resident of Chintamani, the report added.
A senior cop told TNM that accused cop had been running the betting racket for a long time.
“He was part of a police investigation team which keeps tabs on sports gambling, betting and prostitution. Whenever the team arrested sports gambling or betting masters, he used to take note of their modus operandi and use them to conduct his own racket,” the officer was quoted as saying by the news portal.
“He has also taken help of several betting racket masters to run his own racket,” the officer said.
The official alleged that the accused also used to help some to escape or alert them about the police movement.
Not just cricket, the accused allegedly encouraged people to bet on high-value assets like land and residential plots, the report added.
Chikkaballapura District Superintendent of Police G K Mithun Kumar told news agency IANS that the constable was suspended last week and was under surveillance for a long time.
“Following the information given by the person who was arrested last week for running a cricket betting racket, we arrested Manjunath. He was taken into custody on Thursday evening but tested positive for coronavirus after the customary health check-up,” the SP was quoted as saying by the news agency.
The police, meanwhile, said they have registered a case and investigation is on.
