How Rana Daggubati is redefining commercial cinema with film choices. On Monday Masala
Rana Daggubati is one of the most-loved stars, not just in the Telugu-speaking states but across India as well. Today (December 14), he is celebrating his 36th birthday in the company of his family and friends in Hyderabad. On this special day, let us take a look at his rather unconventional film choices ever since his debut, and what commercial cinema means to Rana Daggubati.
A commercial film has been a staple in all South Indian film industries. From projecting an actor as a superhero to mindless comedy and entertainment these are the ingredients that make a successful film. A story comes second. But, not for Rana Daggubati. For he likes to spice things up, but not in a conventional way. And that is why, it is only fair that we’re looking at his illustrious career, on this week’s Monday Masala.
FOR RANA, CONTENT IS KING
For Rana, who has been a visual-effects supervisor before making his acting debut, content has always been the king. For his grand launch, Rana chose a political film titled Leader, which won several awards. Any actor down South, would not attempt a political film as a debut. But Rana’s choice is dominated by good scripts. In fact, in several interviews, he even admitted to the same. This has been his motto when it comes to his acting career.
Be it Baby, Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum or The Ghazi Attack, Rana’s faith in a good story has always proven that his intuition is right. Though he sort of drifted off by playing cameos for a few years after Leader, he has always been reading the pulse of the audience and kept him updated with the current trend.
NO HURRY IN SIGNING FILMS
Rana Daggubati is one actor who doesn’t believe in signing back-to-back films. One look at his career, we would know that he takes his sweet time to sign a film. In 2015, he gambled by dedicating five years of his career to director SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali series. Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali: The Conclusion catapulted Rana to fame and made him a pan-Indian star.
His character Bhallaladeva introduced him as the perfect antagonist to the world. The reach of Bhalladeva in countries like Japan and China was what proved his worth. It has been five years since Baahubali 1 and Rana has been extremely careful about choosing films.
Apart from his cameos, Rana has done about five films since 2015.
STICKLER FOR MYTHOLOGICAL FILMS
Rana Daggubati, in several interviews, expressed his love for mythological and period films. Post Baahubali, he starred in Rudhramadevi, in which he played the role of Chalukya Veerabhadra. His restrained performance once again showcased his acting prowess.
He is presently working on a film on the famous mythological character Hiranyakashyap. In an interview to India Today Television, Rana said, “I’m probably the biggest fan of mythology and historical stories and I do far more films in this space than any other actor.” Dedicating years of his career to a single film does not bother Rana as all he cares about is its outcome.
PICKING DIVERSE GENRES
Throughout his career, Rana Daggubati has not been stereotyped and it is solely because of his script selection. He became an actor to tell stories and his filmography stands testament to the statement. Variety is what Rana Daggubati depends on. From Leader to Baby to Nene Raju Nene Mantri, the Baahubali actor always picked scripts that are in stark contrast to his previous films.
His upcoming line-up of films is all the more exciting. While Kaadan (Aranya/Haathi Mere Saathi) is a film about a jungle man who lives with elephants, his other film Virata Parvam is about Naxalites, while Madai Thiranthu is a period flick on Subhas Chandra Bose’s Independence movement in the 1940s.
With all these unconventional choices, Rana Daggubati is still regarded as a commercial hero, whom producers bank on. Now that’s what we call spicing things up.
